It was an absolute joy to visit Madeira for the first time this winter for a wee elopement shoot with Faye and Laurie. Now, when you think of Madeira you think of winter sun, right? So did I. Turns out we had a really rare few days of stormy days and chilly rain. Not great if you’re planning on hanging by the pool but perfect to capture the moody quality of the island, you just have to laugh off getting a little wet at the same time. Mark and Cole from Way Up North arranged the best few days for us and we will be forever grateful.
The island itself is bigger than thought before arriving. And so diverse! There were so many pockets of different backdrops and landscapes, we were completely spoilt. From coastal views, to old town strolls, to mountain tops, to lush forests. Madeira is full of stunning scenery around each and every turn. You might just want to take it slow on the roads to take it all in (and not get too car sick lol). My absolute favourite spot was the cable car at Porto Moniz that took you down to Fajã da Quebrada Nova. Absolutely breathtaking and we had such beautiful light there too, perfect for photographs. Other fave locations were: Ponta de São Lourenço and Ribera de Janela. And here’s a general link to Madeira info and all the beauty it has to offer for an elopement in winter or any other time of year.
Are you considered heading somewhere new or different for an elopement? There’s something so special about just jetting off to explore somewhere as a couple, or with a few important people. I can highly recommend Madeira for its variety in landscapes, accessibility and uniqueness.
Get in touch if you’re considering an elopement in Madeira, Europe or worldwide. I’m always happy to answer any questions you may have!
